Do CPAP Machines Work?

CPAP therapy is usually recommended as a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition where the soft tissues located at the back of your throat relax when you are asleep. The tissues end up blocking your airway thus causing you to stop breathing. Once you stop breathing, your brain will wake you up so that you can breathe in.

This cycle of your airway getting blocked and you waking up to breathe in can be repeated up to one hundred times in an hour! This greatly affects the quality of your sleep and CPAP therapy is therefore very crucial if you are to sleep properly at night. CPAP machines are used to provide the therapy so that your airways remain open right through the night.

How Do CPAP Machines Work?

A CPAP machine mainly consists of a pump which has a tube connected to it. The other end of the tube is connected to a mask. The work of the pump is to absorb air from the room which is filtered and then pressurized. The amount of pressure that is added to the air is determined by your doctor depending on the severity of your sleep apnea. The pressurized air is then passed on to the tube and this air is received by a mask on the other end. You can then breathe in the pressurized air through the mask.

The pressure that is added to the air is enough to keep the soft tissues in your throat from relaxing while you are asleep. This means that your airway will remain open and you will therefore not have to keep waking up to take in gulps of air.

Do CPAP Machines Stop Snoring?

The use of CPAP machines is known to prevent snoring since your airway is kept open when you are sleeping. Using a CPAP machine every night will also improve the quality of your sleep which will allow you to get the much needed rest that you require. As a result, you will be more energetic and alert during the day.

Insufficient sleep causes a lack of concentration and high levels of forgetfulness during the day. The use of a CPAP machine will enable you to think clearly during the day so as to make proper decisions. You will also prevent the health risks that are associated with sleep apnea such as stroke, heart disease and high blood pressure.

Does A CPAP Machine Cause Dry Mouth?

CPAP machines blow dry air into your airway and this can cause you to suffer from a dry mouth and throat. The solution to this problem is the use of a humidifier. This is a small tank of water which is heated to produce vapor. The vapor is mixed with the pressurized air so that you can breathe in moist air rather than dry air. The moist air will prevent you from experiencing a dry mouth and throat when you wake up.

There are CPAP machines which have an inbuilt humidifier, while other machines have a humidifier that can be disconnected. You can opt to use a machine that has a humidifier which can be disconnected so that in case you need to travel, the machine will be less bulky.
